Stop Water Damage Before It HappensBy Evie Parrish One dangerous occurrence that every homeowner worries about is having his or her home affected by water damage. With the hurricane season taking a huge toll on Florida residents, the one major worry is having flooded homes since hurricanes also bring floods. There are many ways that water damage can affect a homeowner's life and this would also cost him thousands of dollars for the clean up if a flood affects his home. Whether the water damage occurs from a burst water tank, flooding from a rainstorm or moisture in the basement, it can all be very worrisome for any person who has to live there. No one wants to have to deal with water damage; in fact, we want to avoid it more then anything. There are many different ways to determine if you may be prone to water damage in the future and you can try preventing it before it happens. By having the ability to avoid water damage you can avoid many costly events in the future. In order to ensure a flood-free future for us and our homes, go through the following tasks and see whether some are applicable in your own home: * Check water pipes throughout home and especially the basement for any leaks or cracks * Replace old water tanks * Repair cracks in walls * Replace roofs that are older then 15 years old * Check for broken seals around windows and skylights There are so many things that you could do to prevent any form of water damage from taking place in your home --- the list could be endless. If you feel that you might have a leak in the house, whether it's on your roof, around your windows, or anywhere that would let water in from the outdoors, inspect it right away. By preventing the worst before it happens, you are taking the necessary steps to save yourself many unwanted events before they happen. Give special attention to your roof as this is the one area where leaks may appear without anyone noticing. Over time, the durability of your shingles wears off, and when they do reach that point, have these replaced right away. Even if you've purchased a roof that was given a 25-year guarantee, it does not mean that the roof will be perfect for the entire 25 years. It is recommended that you replace your shingles approximately every 15 years or whenever you see any shingles starting to pull up. If you were given a 25 year guarantee when you first purchased the roof, then make sure to contact the installers or the makers of the roof and shingles and have them replace these at no cost to you. Take all the necessary steps you can to avoid water damage from ever happening in your home. If you don't take the time to take care of your home it will end up costing you more in the long run. If you think there is water getting into your home and causing water damage, inspect it right away or it will cost you much more when you decide to get around to it.
