Do Winter Tires Really Make a Difference?By Shawn Wilson If you are one of the millions of people that have to deal winter driving each and every year you know how nerve racking it can be. Without fail during the first real snow storm of the year there are always lots of accidents and the question is can they be reduced by installing snow tires? The short answer is yes they can, snow tires have come a long way. In fact all types of tires have come a long way, tire technology is constantly evolving and while most of us look at them as a piece of round rubber there is a ton of technology that goes into them. So what makes a snow tires different from a standard all season tire. Before I explain the differences let's understand that all season means 3 seasons and doesn't include winter. There is little to no research and development that goes into an all season tire that is related to winter driving. All season really means good for hot, cool and rainy conditions and nothing more. You can get away with driving all seasons in the winter, here is why you shouldn't. Without getting too technical winter tires have a much softer compound meaning they stick to the ice and snow. The tread is also designed to channel snow and water. The other great part about a good winter tire is the ability to clean itself. If you have ever seen someone with old all season tires during a snow storm the whole tire can start to look like a big snowball. A good set of winter tires will always keep themselves free of snow, which means more tire on the ground. One of the problems that used to exist with winter tires was how fast they wear out. While it is still good to remove your winter tires when the snow is gone , the panic to do so isn't what it used to be. Somehow the tire companies have managed to make a really soft compound that sticks to snow and ice while not wearing out too fast. Winter tires however don't come cheap, in most cases they do cost more than your all seasons. The best way to get the most out of winter tires is to buy a second set of rims. Steel rims are relatively inexpensive and they have two benefits. Each time you need to change your tires if you use your existing rims the tires go through a rather violent process in being removing and re-installed. If you have two sets of rims you avoid this process. The second benefit is the savings in labor, each time you have the tires removed and re-installed on the same rims it takes a qualified technician time and time costs money. While the expense is there it is tough to place a dollar amount for your families safety. The tire companies do play on this fear which is quite annoying. I have personally been involved in an accident during bad winter conditions and can confidently say that had both drivers installed winter tires the accident would have been avoided. So this year spend a little less at during the holidays on gifts and buy some winter tires, it could end up saving you a lot more than you might think!
